Kayaking

Kayaking the Wairere Boulders and out to the Hokianga Harbour

Rent kayaks at Wairere Boulders and experience the valley in a completely different way.

The most interesting paddle is to remain in the vicinity of the Boulders, which extend to the property entrance. Allow 30 - 60 minutes.

For those looking for a challenge, you can also kayak the 5kms all the way to the Māngungu Mission House and we’ll pick you up and bring your driver and the kayaks back for an additional fee (by prior arrangement only). Beginning your adventure at high tide you can kayak up the valley between the boulders, and then head out towards the Hokianga Harbour, letting the ebbing tide carry you through the mangroves. Or plan the reverse trip and come in on the incoming tide.

All our kayaks are sit-on-top models, which are easy to use even for beginners and kids. We will supply you with life jackets and paddles. We have 13 single kayaks and a 2-3 person family kayak available. As the Wairere Stream is tidal, kayaking is dependent on the tides. Have a look at local tide times to see if they work in with your visit. A typical trip up the boulder stream then out to the harbour takes an hour and a half to two hours.

Hokianga Harbour tide times for today, tomorrow and this week
