Bird's Eye View of Horeke, Hokianga

This is the view towards the North. On top the first Hokianga pub, where the locals meet on evenings, to the right the pier where the locals like to fish and the Sierra lands from time to time. In the olden days the Sierra navigated the harbour and now finds its use to show tourists the beauty of our area.

Underneath we see the Horeke Store owned by the friendly Blundell family. Here you can find all the little bits'n pieces for daily life. A valuable asset for our little community of about 500 people.

The white dots in the background are the church and the Mangungu Mission House, now a little museum. Ph: 0064 9 401 9640. In this house the treaty of Waitangi has been signed by some of the Maori chiefs before it went to the other side of the Island, to Waitangi, for further signatures (Maoris are New Zealand's indigenous people).

Horeke has also New Zealand's first Post Office. The very History of New Zealand started in this magnificent area.
